Kansas City for the 2026 World Cup

Kansas City is one of the most underrated host cities in the tournament and it's hosting some of the biggest matches. Arrowhead Stadium — already one of the loudest sports venues in the world — is staging five group-stage matches and a Round of 32 knockout game. The headliner: Argentina vs Algeria on June 16, which could be Lionel Messi's first World Cup match on US soil as defending champion.

Sporting Kansas City has one of MLS's most passionate fanbases. The Cauldron supporter section at Children's Mercy Park is legendarily loud. That culture translates directly to how Kansas City watches World Cup matches.

Westport: The Best Soccer Bar District

Westport is Kansas City's bar district and the gathering point for match-day crowds.

The Pitch (Westport) — The definitive soccer bar in Kansas City. Sporting KC supporters meet here, Cauldron members drink here, and international matches are treated with the seriousness they deserve. Multiple screens, good beer, and a crowd that knows the offside rule. For Argentina vs Algeria this will sell out — arrive very early.

McCoy's Public House (Westport) — Brewpub with a large footprint and reliable screen coverage. Good for groups who want food alongside their football. Comfortable atmosphere for afternoon group-stage matches.

Westport Flea Market Bar (Westport) — Kansas City institution with dive bar energy and a loyal local following. Screens are good, beer is cheap, and the crowd is authentic. One of the better places in the city to watch a match with strangers who become friends.

Julep (Westport) — Cocktail bar that shows major sporting events. For the evening knockout matches when you want something beyond beer.

Power & Light District: Downtown Watch Parties

The Power & Light District is Kansas City's downtown entertainment complex and the site of the city's largest outdoor events.

KC Live! Block (Power & Light) — The outdoor entertainment plaza in the Power & Light District will host official FIFA fan zone programming for the World Cup. Large screens, food vendors, and entertainment. This is where the masses gather for matches that don't have tickets available. For Argentina vs Algeria, expect tens of thousands here.

The Yard House (Power & Light) — Large chain sports bar with comprehensive screen coverage. Reliable for groups who can't get into smaller, more atmospheric spots.

Lola's (Power & Light) — KC cocktail institution in the district. Shows major events and has good capacity.

The Crossroads Arts District

The Crossroads is KC's hip neighborhood between downtown and Westport with an eclectic mix of bars and galleries.

Torn Label Brewing (Crossroads) — Local brewery with a large taproom and screens for major sporting events. Good beer and a creative-class crowd that follows football internationally.

Border Brewing Company (Crossroads) — Another solid Crossroads brewery option with match-day viewing parties.

Grünauer (Crossroads) — Austrian restaurant with Viennese atmosphere that becomes genuinely electric for European matches. Given that Austria is in Group J with Argentina, this becomes a very interesting spot for the Group J matches.

River Market

The River Market neighborhood north of downtown has a growing bar scene.

Brewery Emperial (River Market) — Large brewery taproom in a beautiful space. Hosts viewing events for major sporting occasions.

The Farmhouse (River Market) — Restaurant and bar with a loyal local following. Shows major football matches and has outdoor space for summer evenings.

Near Arrowhead Stadium

Arrowhead is in the Truman Sports Complex, about 10 miles from downtown. Transit options are limited — the stadium was built for cars.

Getting there:

  • Rideshare: Most practical option. Post-match surge pricing will be significant — consider pre-booking or walking a few blocks from the stadium before requesting a pickup.
  • Official shuttles: The city will run dedicated match-day shuttles from downtown and from park-and-ride locations. Check KC Streetcar/city transport for details.
  • Driving: The sports complex has ample parking but exits slowly. Budget 60–90 minutes post-match.
Pre-match near the stadium: Limited options immediately around Arrowhead. Most fans drink downtown or in Westport before the shuttle/rideshare to the stadium. The sports complex itself has tailgate areas that activate several hours before kickoff.

The Sporting KC Connection

Kansas City's soccer culture is anchored by Sporting KC and their supporter group The Cauldron. For World Cup matches, Cauldron members typically organize viewing parties at their usual haunts.

The Sporting Club (Overland Park) — Sporting KC's official fan club network has locations including this venue. Check their events calendar for official World Cup viewing parties.

Practical Notes

  • Time zone: Central — a 3 PM ET match kicks off at 2 PM local. The Argentina vs Algeria match (9 PM ET) kicks off at 8 PM local — perfect evening timing.
  • Weather: Kansas City in June can be warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Have a backup indoor option for outdoor viewing plans.
  • The Messi effect: Hotels and bars in Kansas City are already booking up for the Argentina match week. If you haven't made accommodation plans yet, do it now.
  • Sporting KC's stadium (Children's Mercy Park) is in Kansas City, Kansas — separate from the World Cup venue. Arrowhead is in Kansas City, Missouri. Different cities, both in the metro.
