Guadalajara

The Soul of Mexican Football

Guadalajara is Mexico's second city — the birthplace of tequila, mariachi, and some of the country's most intense football rivalries. Estadio Akron is one of the most modern stadiums in Latin America, set in the hills northwest of the city. Two legendary clubs, Chivas and Atlas, call this city home. The culture here is fiercely proud, warmly welcoming, and unlike anywhere else in Mexico.

Airports & Arrival

Guadalajara International Airport (Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla)

GDL

About 25 km south of Estadio Akron; about 18 km southeast of the city centre

GDL is a modern, well-organised airport with several international connections. Uber is recommended for reliability and pricing — the official airport taxi rates are fair but Uber is usually slightly cheaper. Allow extra time on match days when traffic backs up on the main ring roads.

  • No direct rail from the airport — Uber is the practical option to the city centre (25–35 min, around $8–12 USD)
  • Official airport taxis available at fixed-rate booths in the arrivals hall — rates posted clearly
  • Rental car practical if you plan to explore Jalisco's tequila region or Lake Chapala

Stadium & Match-Day Transit

Estadio Akron

📍 Av. de Las Rosas 3476, Pinar de la Venta, Zapopan, Jalisco 45138

👥 Capacity: 49,850

Getting There

Estadio Akron is in Zapopan, about 17 km northwest of Guadalajara's historic centre. The Tren Ligero (light rail) Line 1 runs to Periférico Norte station, where game-day shuttles connect to the stadium — total journey about 40–50 min from the centre. Uber is also practical: 30–40 min from the city centre depending on match-day traffic.

Public transit

  • Tren Ligero Line 1 to Periférico Norte station — game-day shuttles connect to Estadio Akron from there
  • Total journey from the Centro Histórico via Tren Ligero + shuttle: about 45–55 min
  • Line 1 runs frequently and cheaply — grab a multi-trip card at any Tren Ligero station

Rideshare

  • Uber is widely available in Guadalajara and very affordable by international standards
  • Pre-match Uber from Chapultepec or Providencia takes 25–35 min
  • Post-match surges are significant — walk at least 10 min from the stadium before requesting a pickup
  • InDrive is also active locally and sometimes undercuts Uber on pricing

Driving and parking

  • Parking is available at Estadio Akron but fills quickly on match days
  • Periférico Norte and the main access road to Zapopan back up severely post-match
  • Allow 90 min after the final whistle before departing if driving

Walking and biking

  • Not walkable from the city centre — 17 km across a large urban area
  • MiBici bikeshare operates in central Guadalajara but does not reach the stadium

Match-day tips

  • Estadio Akron is architecturally spectacular — one of the most impressive stadium designs in North America
  • Arrive 90 min early — the shuttle approach from Periférico Norte can be slow
  • The stadium is surrounded by open land — very limited restaurants nearby, so eat in the city before coming
  • Security screening at Mexican World Cup venues is thorough — clear bags save significant time at the gates

🚇 Getting Around

Guadalajara has a Tren Ligero (light rail) and Macrobús BRT network covering the city centre. The key challenge is the stadium's location in Zapopan — Tren Ligero + shuttle is the best public option. Uber is extremely practical, very affordable, and runs throughout the city.

  • Tren Ligero Line 1 from Centro to Periférico Norte, then stadium shuttle — cheapest option to Akron
  • Uber is widely available and very affordable by international standards — average stadium trip under $6 USD
  • GDL airport has no rail connection — Uber from the airport to the city is 25–35 min
  • MiBici bikeshare operates in the Chapultepec, Providencia, and Centro area — great for moving between neighbourhoods
  • For Tequila Valley day trips, Uber to the town of Tequila takes about 60–70 min and is straightforward

Useful Local Resources

Emergency: 911 (standard across Mexico since 2017). Tourist assistance: 078. Hospital Civil de Guadalajara: (33) 3614-7000. Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). USD accepted at many tourist venues but pesos needed for street food and cantinas.

Walk & Bike Notes

The Centro Histórico and Chapultepec corridor are highly walkable. Tlaquepaque is a walker's town. The city has invested in pedestrian infrastructure in its core neighbourhoods.

MiBici bikeshare operates throughout the centre with hundreds of docking stations. Guadalajara has growing protected bike lanes — particularly on Av. Chapultepec and connecting streets.

  • Centro Histórico
  • Av. Chapultepec
  • Tlaquepaque village centre
  • Providencia

MiBici docks throughout the centre, Americana, and Providencia. Day passes available at kiosks or in the MiBici app. Very affordable.

Safety & Match-Day Tips

  • Guadalajara is safe in the main tourist areas — Chapultepec, Providencia, Tlaquepaque, and the Centro Histórico tourist zone
  • Use Uber rather than unmarked street taxis — safer and more reliable for international visitors
  • Avoid displaying expensive equipment visibly in markets — pickpocketing occurs in Mercado San Juan de Dios
  • Stay on main streets after midnight in the Centro Histórico
  • Carry pesos for street food and cantinas — many smaller establishments are cash-only
  • Altitude is 1,566m — factor this in for alcohol consumption and physical activity in the heat
