Weather and packing

June: Very hot and humid, highs 32–35°C (90–95°F). Afternoon thunderstorms are common. This is peak Houston summer.

July: Hottest and most humid month. Highs 33–37°C (91–99°F). NRG Stadium's retractable roof means match conditions are controlled.

  • Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing is essential — Houston humidity is intense
  • A compact umbrella or rain layer for afternoon storms
  • Sunscreen and a hat for outdoor fan zones — the sun is aggressive even with cloud cover
  • Carry a large water bottle — dehydration in Houston summer heat happens fast

Stadium & Match-Day Transit

NRG Stadium

📍 1 NRG Pkwy, Houston, TX 77054

👥 Capacity: 72,220

Getting There

NRG Stadium is in the NRG Park complex, about 8 km south of downtown. The METRORail Red Line has an NRG Park stop — about 15 minutes from downtown Main St stops. Rideshare and game-day shuttles are also used. The Red Line is strongly preferred on match days.

Public transit

  • METRORail Red Line: NRG Park station — direct service from Downtown and Midtown
  • Red Line connects to Hobby Airport (HOU) as well as Downtown Main St corridor
  • Extra rail service on match days — confirm schedule on the METRO website

Rideshare

  • Rideshare is practical pre-match but post-match surge from NRG is severe
  • Walk along Kirby Dr away from the stadium for a faster post-match pickup
  • Pre-book a scheduled Uber or Lyft before kickoff to lock pricing

Driving and parking

  • NRG Park has extensive parking — NRG lots are closest to the stadium gate
  • Main St and Loop 610 back up severely after full-capacity events
  • Park-and-ride with the METRO Red Line from further north is a practical alternative

Walking and biking

  • Museum District and Medical Center neighbourhoods are walking distance from NRG Park
  • Not walkable from Downtown — 6+ km in dangerous summer heat
  • B-Cycle bikeshare exists in limited areas of Houston

Match-day tips

  • NRG Stadium has a retractable roof — match conditions are controlled regardless of the extreme weather outside
  • Hydrate before entering the stadium — Houston heat drains you fast in the outdoor queues
  • Museum District restaurants and bars are within walking distance for pre-match
  • Arrive at least 90 minutes early — NRG Park draws huge crowds and queues are long
