World Cup 2026 San Francisco Fan Guide — Matches, Hotels, Transit & Best Bars
Complete fan guide for the 2026 World Cup in the San Francisco Bay Area — Levi's Stadium matches, Caltrain transit, best soccer bars, and where to stay in SF and Silicon Valley.
Hotels, stadium transit, bars, and fan hubs
San Francisco at the 2026 World Cup
The Bay Area is hosting five World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara: Qatar vs Switzerland (June 13), Austria vs Jordan (June 17), Türkiye vs Paraguay (June 19), Paraguay vs Australia (June 25), and a Round of 32 knockout game (July 1).
The Bay Area's tech-driven international population means a genuinely global audience for every match — Silicon Valley has substantial communities from nearly every football-loving nation on earth. The challenge for fans is that Levi's Stadium is in Santa Clara, not San Francisco, requiring more planning than most host cities.
The Matches at Levi's Stadium
Levi's Stadium is in Santa Clara in the South Bay, home of the San Francisco 49ers. Capacity is approximately 68,500 for World Cup.
This is not in San Francisco. It's 45 miles south of the city — plan your transit accordingly.
Getting there — the right way:
Caltrain is the answer. Take Caltrain from San Francisco (4th & King / Millbrae), San Jose (Diridon), or anywhere on the peninsula directly to Santa Clara Station, then walk or take a free shuttle to the stadium (approximately 10 minutes). This completely bypasses highway traffic.
- From San Francisco 4th & King: ~55 minutes to Santa Clara Station on Caltrain
- From San Jose Diridon: ~10 minutes to Santa Clara Station
- From Millbrae (SFO connection): ~50 minutes
- Frequency on match days: Enhanced Caltrain service with extra trains
Do not drive on match days. Highway 101 South and Highway 237 are notoriously congested. Post-match traffic can extend exit times by 90+ minutes.
Where to Stay
San Francisco (Union Square, SoMa, Mission) — The experience choice. Stay in the city, ride Caltrain for matches. Hotels: Hotel Nikko, Marriott Marquis, The St. Regis San Francisco. Expensive but worth it for the city experience.
San Jose Downtown — 10 minutes from the stadium by Caltrain. Much cheaper than SF. Good restaurant and bar scene. Hotels: San Jose Marriott, Hilton San Jose, The Sainte Claire.
Sunnyvale / Santa Clara / Cupertino — Closest to the stadium. Limited nightlife but very convenient for match days. Good for fans attending multiple games who want simplicity. Hotels: Marriott Santa Clara, Hyatt Regency Santa Clara.
Mountain View / Palo Alto — On the Caltrain line, pleasant walkable downtowns, good restaurants. A middle ground between SF prices and suburban convenience.
Best Soccer Bars in San Francisco
The Double Dutch (SoMa) — SF's best dedicated soccer bar. The go-to for serious football fans.
The Chieftain (SoMa) — Large Irish pub with strong football watching tradition and the capacity to handle big crowds.
The Penalty Spot (Mission) — Neighborhood soccer bar with a Latin American crowd for South American matches and a mixed international crowd for European games.
Gestalt Haus (Mission) — German beer bar for Group E and F matches.
Zeitgeist (Mission) — Legendary outdoor bar. The massive back patio is perfect for afternoon summer match viewings. Cash only, unpretentious, excellent.
San Jose Soccer Bars
San Jose has its own strong soccer culture anchored by the Earthquakes.
Trials Pub (San Jose Downtown) — The Earthquakes supporter HQ. Best soccer bar in the South Bay. Essential stop for match days.
The Farmers Union (San Jose Downtown) — Large sports bar near the SAP Center and San Jose Diridon Station. Good capacity for big match crowds.
O'Flaherty's Irish Pub (San Jose Downtown) — Irish pub with European football watching tradition. Opens early for morning matches.
Paper Plane (San Jose) — Craft cocktail bar for the post-match drink.
Fan Zones and Public Viewings
San Francisco waterfront/Ferry Building area — The city is expected to activate waterfront plazas for public viewing events during the World Cup. The Ferry Building plaza and Embarcadero areas are natural gathering points.
San Jose Plaza de César Chávez (Downtown San Jose) — The main downtown plaza will host fan zone programming for matches, particularly when South Bay attendance is high.
Getting to San Francisco
SFO Airport: Silver BART line connects to downtown San Francisco in 30 minutes ($10 fare). No surcharges, no traffic.
Oakland Airport (OAK): Often cheaper flights, connects to Oakland Coliseum BART station. Downtown SF in ~30 minutes.
From Los Angeles: Amtrak Coast Starlight runs overnight (12h) or fly (1h15m). Domestic flights are frequent on this corridor.
From Seattle: Amtrak Coast Starlight (20h) or fly (2h30m). For the overlapping match schedules between Seattle and SF, flying is practical.
Practical Tips
- Caltrain app: Download the Caltrain app before your trip. Mobile ticketing makes boarding simple.
- June in SF vs Santa Clara: SF is 15–18°C (60–65°F) and often foggy. Santa Clara is warmer and sunnier — 20–25°C (68–77°F). Pack layers if you're going from city to stadium.
- Tech world context: Silicon Valley during the World Cup will be unusual — the tech campuses empty out for matches in ways American sports don't usually achieve. Expect to watch some games in company cafeterias with colleagues from every football-loving country.
- Earthquakes vs 49ers: Levi's Stadium is the 49ers' home and San Jose's Avaya Stadium hosts the Earthquakes — different venues in different cities. Don't confuse them for transit planning.
