Brisbane Sports Travel Guide

Brisbane is building toward hosting the 2032 Olympic Games and is already a regular stop for cricket, rugby league, and Australian rules football. It is compact, warm year-round, and considerably cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne as an event base.

Getting around

Airports

Brisbane Airport (BNE) connects to the CBD in about 20 minutes on the Airtrain. Gold Coast (OOL) is around 90 minutes south and is used by some domestic and low-cost services.

Local transit

Trains, buses, and the CityCat ferry cover the city, all on the Translink network with contactless payment. Suncorp Stadium is walkable from the CBD via Caxton Street, and the Gabba is a short trip from South Bank or Woolloongabba station.

    Stay in the CBD or South Bank. Suncorp Stadium is walkable from the CBD via Caxton Street, which is part of the matchday experience rather than just a route.

    Caxton Street from mid-afternoon, then the ground. Check whether your event ticket includes Translink public transport on the day, which is common here.

    The CityCat ferry between South Bank and the CBD is a genuinely useful transport link, not just a tourist ride. Airtrain to the airport takes about 20 minutes.

Planning Brisbane

  • Caxton Street is the traditional pre-match route to Suncorp Stadium and is part of the matchday experience.
  • Event tickets on the Translink network often include public transport on the day of the event. Check your ticket conditions.
  • Seasons are inverted relative to the northern hemisphere. Summer runs December through February and is hot and humid.
  • The CityCat ferry is a genuinely useful transport option, not just a tourist ride, and connects South Bank to the CBD quickly.

Summer Olympic Games guide

A multi-week programme across dozens of sports at venues spread throughout the host city and sometimes well beyond it. Tickets are sold by session rather than by day, so a single sport can have several sessions in one day at the same venue. Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Olympic Games from July 14 to 30, with the Paralympic Games from August 15 to 27. Brisbane hosts in 2032.
