Dortmund Sports Travel Guide
Dortmund is a football pilgrimage rather than a city break. The draw is one of the largest club grounds in Europe and the standing terrace behind one goal, and the honest advice is to build the trip around the match and use the wider Ruhr region for everything else. The centre is small, the ground is fifteen minutes from it, and the regional rail network puts several other Bundesliga cities within an hour.

Getting around
Airports
Dortmund Airport (DTM) is small and serves mostly low-cost European routes. Düsseldorf (DUS) is the practical gateway at about an hour by train, and Cologne/Bonn (CGN) and Frankfurt (FRA) are both reachable by direct rail if the fare works better.
Local transit
The U-Bahn and regional rail both serve the stadium, with Signal-Iduna-Park station a short walk from the ground and the U45 tram running from the centre. Match tickets in Germany commonly include regional transit on the day, which is worth checking before buying anything separately.

Fly into Düsseldorf and take the regional train to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof. Stay in the centre or the Kreuzviertel and eat there rather than around the station.

Get to the ground early. The approach along Strobelallee fills hours before kickoff and that is the part people travel for. Take the U45 or the regional train rather than driving.

Sunday
Either the German Football Museum next to the main station, or a regional train to Gelsenkirchen or Essen if there is a second fixture worth seeing before you fly out of Düsseldorf.
Practical travel tips
Planning Dortmund
- The standing terrace behind the south goal is sold overwhelmingly to season ticket holders and members. Visitors should plan on a seated ticket and treat anything else as a bonus.
- Verify what your match ticket includes for transit. Many German clubs bundle regional travel on match day, which changes how you plan the return.
- Hotel inventory in the city is thin for the size of the crowd. On a big fixture weekend, book early or base in Düsseldorf or Essen and take the train in.
- Bundesliga dates move for broadcast with limited notice. Do not book a fixed non-refundable weekend around a provisional fixture date.
- The Ruhr region is dense with clubs. If you are travelling this far, check whether a second ground has a fixture the same weekend.
