Glasgow Sports Travel Guide
Glasgow is the most football-saturated city in Britain, with two large clubs in the east and south, a national stadium in the same city, and a drinking and live music culture that runs independently of whether there is a fixture on. It is also cheap by UK standards and small enough that almost everything worth doing sits within a few miles of the centre.

Getting around
Airports
Glasgow Airport (GLA) is about 25 minutes from the centre by express bus. Edinburgh (EDI) is roughly 90 minutes away door to door and often has better long-haul connections. Prestwick (PIK) serves a handful of low-cost routes and has a direct rail link.
Local transit
The Subway is a single circular line covering the centre and West End but does not reach either major football ground. Suburban rail does: Dalmarnock and Bridgeton for the east end, Ibrox on the Subway for the south. The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes.

A sports weekend in Glasgow

Friday
Stay in the Merchant City or Finnieston. Eat on Argyle Street in Finnieston and drink in the Merchant City, both of which are walkable from most central hotels.

Saturday
Suburban rail or Subway out to the ground depending which fixture you are at, arriving early. Back into the centre afterwards rather than trying to drink near the stadium, where the pubs are local and busy.

Sunday
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the West End, or the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden if you want the third ground. Airport bus from the centre takes about 25 minutes.
Practical travel tips
Planning Glasgow
- Scottish league fixture dates move for broadcast and for European commitments. Confirm the date and kickoff time close to travel rather than assuming a published date holds.
- Old Firm fixtures operate under heavier policing, restricted away allocations and different pub arrangements across the city. If that is the match you want, research the specific arrangements for that fixture.
- Neither major ground has a station at the gate. Plan the last ten minutes on foot and agree a meeting point for afterwards.
- Alcohol is not sold in the general concourses at Scottish football grounds. The drinking happens before and after, not during.
- Winter kickoffs are dark, wet and cold in a way that catches visitors out. Bring a proper waterproof layer, not a jacket.
