Liverpool Sports Travel Guide
Liverpool is a compact waterfront city with two football clubs about a mile apart, neither of which has a rail station at the ground. That single fact shapes every matchday: you stay in the centre, you take a bus or a taxi, and you plan the way back before you go. The city itself is one of the best value weekend trips in England, with a strong food and music scene along Bold Street and the Baltic Triangle.

Getting around
Airports
Liverpool John Lennon (LPL) is small and about 30 minutes from the centre by bus. Manchester Airport is roughly an hour away by train and carries far more long-haul traffic, which makes it the more practical arrival point for international visitors.
Local transit
Merseyrail covers the wider region and the city centre is walkable end to end. Neither major football ground has its own station, so matchday buses from the centre and from Sandhills are the standard route. Lime Street is the intercity rail terminus.

Stay in the centre or Ropewalks. Neither major ground has a station, so proximity to the bus routes and taxi ranks matters more than proximity to the stadium.

Saturday
Matchday bus from the centre or Sandhills, allowing 20 to 30 minutes. Bold Street before, Baltic Triangle after, and a plan for the queue back agreed in advance.

Sunday
The waterfront and Albert Dock, then Lime Street for the train out. Manchester Airport is an hour away and carries far more international routes than Liverpool's own.
Practical travel tips
Planning Liverpool
- Do not plan to drive to a match. Residential parking restrictions around both grounds are strict and enforced.
- Evening European fixtures finish late and the bus queue afterwards is long. Agree a meeting point if you are in a group.
- The walk from the centre to Anfield is about 45 minutes and uphill. Fine going, unpleasant coming back.
- Aintree during the spring racing festival fills the city entirely. Hotel pricing that weekend is a different market.

Thirty-six clubs play eight league-phase fixtures against eight different opponents, four at home and four away, in a single combined table. The top eight go straight to the round of 16. Clubs finishing ninth to twenty-fourth enter a two-legged knockout playoff for the remaining places. Knockout rounds are two legs, home and away, until a single-match final at a neutral venue.

Twenty clubs play 38 matches each, home and away against every other club, from August to May. There are no playoffs. The champion is whoever finishes top. The bottom three are relegated and replaced by three clubs promoted from the division below, which is why late-season fixtures at the bottom of the table can matter as much as the ones at the top.
