San Francisco Sports Travel Guide
San Francisco has two of the best-sited venues in American sport, a waterfront ballpark and a modern arena, both walkable from the same part of the city. It also has a football team that plays 40 miles south in Santa Clara, which is the trap every visitor falls into. Base yourself around Mission Bay and South of Market and the city venues are on your doorstep, then treat anything on the peninsula as a day trip.

Getting around
Airports
SFO is about 30 minutes from downtown on BART and is the main international gateway. Oakland (OAK) is across the bay and also on BART, often cheaper. San Jose (SJC) is the closest airport to Santa Clara and is the right choice if your trip is built around a football game rather than the city.
Local transit
Muni Metro reaches both Oracle Park and Chase Center, and BART covers the airport, the East Bay and the Mission. Caltrain runs south toward Santa Clara and is the only practical transit option to the football stadium, with special event service on game days. The city core is walkable but the hills are not a joke.

- Union Square (most hotel stock, central, on every transit line)
- Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach (tourist core, good for a first visit, longer to the venues)

- Santa Clara or San Jose (only sensible base for a football weekend at Levi’s Stadium)

Friday
BART in from SFO and base in SoMa or Mission Bay. Eat in Hayes Valley or the Mission, and keep the evening close to the transit lines rather than driving.

Saturday
Ferry Building market in the morning, then walk down the Embarcadero to Oracle Park or over to Chase Center. Both are a short walk from each other and from most SoMa hotels.

Sunday
Golden Gate Park and the western neighbourhoods, or Caltrain south if there is a game in Santa Clara. BART back to SFO takes about 30 minutes from downtown.
Practical travel tips
Planning San Francisco
- The football team plays in Santa Clara, roughly 40 miles south. A San Francisco hotel means an hour or more each way and Caltrain is the only sane route.
- Summer in the city is cold and foggy, particularly in the evening and on the western side. Bring layers regardless of what the season implies.
- Oracle Park is on the water and the wind off the bay drops the temperature sharply after sunset. A night game needs a jacket even in July.
- Do not leave anything visible in a parked car anywhere in the city. Vehicle break-ins are common and rental cars are targeted.
- BART from SFO is faster and far cheaper than a rideshare into the city at almost every hour of the day.
