The NBA is the most forgiving major league to travel for. Arenas are usually downtown and walkable from hotels and restaurants, home dates come around twice a week rather than once a fortnight, and a weeknight ticket in a good building is often cheaper than a weekend seat at a lesser one. If you want one sports trip that works as a normal city break, this is it.

How the format works

Thirty teams play 82 regular-season games from October into April, split between two conferences. A play-in tournament decides the final playoff places in each conference, then four rounds of best-of-seven series lead to the Finals. An in-season tournament runs alongside the regular season in the autumn, with its games counting toward the regular-season record except for the final.

A short history

The league formed in 1946 and merged with the rival ABA in 1976, which brought in four franchises and the three-point line. Its modern arena era began in the 1990s and 2000s, when most teams moved from suburban buildings into downtown arenas built as year-round entertainment venues, a shift that is exactly why NBA travel is easy today.

Why fans travel for it

Proximity. NBA seating puts you closer to the athletes than almost any other major sport, the arenas are indoors and comfortable, and the game is designed around a broadcast rhythm that also works live. For visitors, a downtown arena means you can eat well, walk to the game, and be back in a bar twenty minutes after the final buzzer.

How the calendar shapes a trip

The schedule is released in August, so a regular-season trip books months ahead. Weeknight games are cheaper and easier than weekends and are the sensible choice if the trip is about the city as much as the game. Playoff travel is short-notice: series dates are confirmed only as each round resolves.

What catches people out

›Teams play back-to-backs, and star players are sometimes rested. If the trip is built around seeing one specific player, understand that risk before paying a premium for it.
›Weeknight games against mid-table opponents are the value pick and usually have the best seat availability.
›Playoff pricing moves round by round and does not come back down. Buying for a later round before it is confirmed is a gamble on the series length.
›Most downtown arenas are better reached on transit or on foot than by car. Parking is expensive and the exit is slow.
›Arrive 45 minutes early. Security lines, merchandise and the food concourse are part of the experience at the newer buildings.
›Several arenas host an NHL team as well, so a two-night stay can cover two sports in the same building.
