NBA Finals

The Finals are the hardest ticket in basketball and the hardest trip to plan, for the same reason: nobody knows where they will be until about a week before they start. Unlike a neutral-site championship, the Finals are hosted by the two teams that get there, so the destination is decided by the playoffs rather than by a bid process years earlier.

How the format works

A best-of-seven series between the conference champions. The team with the better regular-season record holds home-court advantage and hosts games one, two, five and seven, with the other team hosting three, four and six. Games five, six and seven are played only if the series needs them, which is the single biggest complication for anyone booking travel.

A short history

The championship series has been played since the league’s first season in 1947. The current home-court pattern, in which the higher seed hosts games one, two, five and seven, was adopted in 2014, replacing a format that grouped the middle games differently to reduce travel in an era of harder cross-country trips.

Why fans travel for it

It is the only round where the whole league stops and one series carries everything. For the two host cities it becomes a civic event: watch parties outside the arena, bars at capacity hours before tip-off, and a crowd inside that has waited a year or longer for it.

How the calendar shapes a trip

The two host cities are confirmed when the conference finals end, usually less than a week before game one. Flights and hotels reprice immediately. Fans who cannot get inside the arena often travel anyway for the watch party outside it, which at several venues is a genuinely good experience in its own right.

›Games five, six and seven may never be played. Never book non-refundable travel for a game that depends on the series going long.
›Host cities are only known once both conference finals resolve. Plan for the possibility, book on confirmation.
›Arena capacity is a fraction of demand. The realistic options for most travelling fans are the official watch party outside the venue or a bar district near the arena.
›Hotel rates in the host cities reprice within hours of the matchup being set, and minimum-stay rules often appear alongside them.
›Security perimeters around the arena expand on Finals nights. Allow far more time than for a regular-season game.
›If you want a guaranteed Finals-adjacent trip, All-Star Weekend in February is announced years ahead and is the bookable alternative.
